History of Math Presentation Day 1 - Four Things I Learned

1. I appreciate Nadine introduced the relationship between permutations and church bells in the presentation. I also did some researches on it — here is one interesting article about this topic written by Toni Beardon from the University of Cambridge.

2. Thanks to Michelle’s presentation, I now know that Pascal’s triangle was not only developed in Europe and China but in India and the Arab world as well. It is always amazing to see people from different parts of the world coming up with similar ideas in their mathematical explorations.

3. Jenny’s presentation on probability showed how possibility was embodied in religions and games. Although probability theory is fairly new in the study of mathematics, it has probably been around longer than topics such as geometry.

4. I love Nicole’s presentation on the “diss battle” between Carl Friedrich Gauss and Adrien-Marie Legendre about prime numbers. It would be great to introduce funny mathematical stories like this one in my own teaching.
